Spraying for Ball Moss. While it certainly is true that ball moss is not a parasite, it most certainly can kill a tree by allelopathy. One misconception is that ball moss has light penetration, but it actually reduces it. While on the surface it may seem plausible, you will notice that it grows under the foliage rather than on top. This tree has a colorful history. Located in Brazoria County, Texas, this Live Oak is completely hollow on the inside. It is believed that the local Native American tribe kept their fires alive in this tree. It is also believed that the Spaniards harvested ship building materials from this tree. The crown shape indicates topping influences.

Tree spike injuries spread diseases that can kill a tree many years after the damage has taken place. This photo shows tree spike injuries to a pine. Burls related to the past injury is indicative of a bacterial infection. This inoculation occurred when the dirty spike went into the tree or as the spike went into the tree it carried the bacteria into the tree from the outer bark. Either way the result is the same.
