Tree Information for Confident Project Planning
Before construction, landscape changes, or preservation decisions begin, it helps to know which trees are present and where they are located. A tree survey establishes a documented reference for the trees within a defined project area.
Eric Putnam BCMA Inc. provides arborist-led tree surveys throughout Greater Houston and the Gulf Coast. We work with homeowners, developers, builders, architects, HOAs, and property managers to collect information appropriate to their project.
Understanding Tree Surveys
When a Tree Survey May Be Appropriate
A tree survey can support projects involving:
- New construction or property development.
- Additions, pools, driveways, and landscape renovations.
- Tree preservation planning.
- Municipal tree review or permitting.
- Documentation before construction begins.
- Coordination with architects, engineers, and landscape designers.
- Identification of trees within a proposed work area.
Tree Survey Services We Provide
Depending on the agreed scope, services may include:
- Identifying trees by species.
- Assigning individual tree numbers.
- Measuring trunk diameter.
- Recording tree locations.
- Documenting visible condition observations.
- Photographing selected trees and site conditions.
- Coordinating tree information with available project plans.
- Preparing a tree schedule, marked plan, or other agreed deliverable.
The survey area, included trees, location requirements, and documentation format are established before fieldwork begins.
Our Tree Survey Process
Establish the Project Requirements
We discuss the purpose of the survey, the area involved, the intended recipient, and the information needed. Requirements from a municipality or project team should be provided at this stage.
Review Plans and Site Information
We review available property plans, proposed improvements, previous tree records, and relevant submission criteria. This helps align fieldwork with the project’s needs.
Collect Tree Information
We identify and document the included trees within accessible areas. Measurements, location information, photographs, and observations are collected according to the agreed scope.
Prepare the Survey Deliverables
The collected information is reviewed and organized into the agreed spreadsheet, table, catalog, marked plan, written summary, or other project-specific format.
Do You Already Know Which Tree Evaluation You Need?
Request a Tree Survey when you need trees documented and located for a property or project. Choose a Tree Catalog when your primary goal is an organized inventory for maintenance and ongoing management.
Tree Measurements and Location Requirements
The measurement and location details needed for a tree survey depend on how you'll use the information. A municipal submission may require different information than an initial landscape planning exercise.
Provide applicable criteria before fieldwork so the scope can address the required tree sizes, measurement procedures, location detail, and submission format. Boundary information must come from the appropriate property records or licensed land surveyor.

Common Questions About Tree Surveys
Is a tree survey the same as a land survey?
No. Our service documents trees. Property boundaries, easements, and other legal survey information must be established by a licensed land surveyor.
Can a tree survey be used for a permit application?
A survey can be scoped to address the supplied municipal requirements. The applicable criteria should be reviewed before work begins. Acceptance is determined by the reviewing authority.
Does a tree survey include a detailed health or risk assessment?
Only when that work is included in the agreed scope. Basic condition observations do not provide the same level of investigation as a dedicated health evaluation or tree risk assessment.
Can I receive a catalog with my survey?
Yes. Survey information can also be organized into a catalog for future reference. The requested fields and format should be established before the work begins.
