Objective-Based Pruning, Done the Right Way
Tree pruning should never be reduced to random cutting or routine thinning. The right approach depends on species, age, structure, site conditions, surrounding targets, and the reason the work is being considered in the first place. At Eric Putnam BCMA, our pruning recommendations are based on clear objectives, proper technique, and long-term tree performance. Our team provides arborist-led pruning for homeowners who want thoughtful work, clear communication, and respect for the tree.
When Pruning Is the Right Service
Tree pruning may be appropriate when you need to address:
- Risk reduction and deadwood management
- Structural pruning and training
- Clearance over roofs, driveways, walkways, or other targets
- Canopy restoration after storm damage
- Load management on overextended limbs
- Long-term improvement in tree structure and performance
What We Do
Our pruning process begins with defining the objective before any cuts are made. We evaluate the tree’s structure, species characteristics, site conditions, and surrounding targets, then build the scope around what the tree actually needs.
Our pruning work may include:
- Crown cleaning to remove dead, dying, broken, or weakly attached branches
- Structural pruning to improve branch spacing and architecture
- Clearance pruning where branches conflict with structures, access, or sight lines
- Selective reduction where appropriate
- Storm recovery pruning to restore canopy structure after damage

Common Questions About Tree Pruning
Do you top trees to reduce height or risk?
No. Topping is a harmful practice that creates weak regrowth, accelerates decay, and increases long-term risk. If height reduction is needed, we evaluate whether responsible reduction pruning is feasible, or whether removal and replacement is the more appropriate option.
Can pruning reduce tree risk?
Pruning can reduce certain risks, but it does not eliminate all risk. Deadwood removal, selective reduction, and structural pruning can improve conditions, but defects, decay, and root issues may limit what pruning can accomplish.
