Healthier Palms Start With Understanding the Problem
Yellowing fronds, thinning crowns, and weak growth can signal problems with a palm’s nutrition, roots, growing conditions, or overall health. Identifying the cause is the first step toward determining what care may help.
Eric Putnam BCMA Inc. provides arborist-led palm tree care throughout Greater Houston and the Gulf Coast. We evaluate the palm and its surrounding environment before recommending treatment, site improvements, or continued monitoring.
Understanding Palm Tree Treatment
Identifying What Is Affecting Your Palm
Yellowing fronds, thinning crowns, and distorted new growth can have several causes. Nutrient deficiencies, root stress, insect activity, disease, and cold injury may produce overlapping symptoms, making an evaluation important before choosing a treatment. We examine the palm and its growing conditions to determine what may be contributing to the decline. Recommendations address the findings, the palm’s potential for recovery, and any site or maintenance changes needed to support its health.
Signs a Palm May Need Treatment
Consider having your palm evaluated if you notice:
- Yellowing, browning, or spotting across multiple fronds.
- A thinning crown or reduced frond production.
- Weak, distorted, or discolored new growth.
- Decline following planting, construction, or changes in irrigation.
- Unusual insect activity or visible damage.
- Continued deterioration despite previous care.
Our Palm Tree Treatment Process
Palm and Site Evaluation
We examine the palm’s visible condition and consider its species, planting history, irrigation, drainage, pruning practices, and surrounding root zone.
Assessment of Contributing Factors
We assess whether the symptoms suggest environmental stress, nutritional problems, insect activity, disease, or a combination of factors. We may recommend further investigation when a visual evaluation cannot determine the cause.
Treatment Recommendation
Recommendations are based on the findings and the palm’s potential to respond. Where appropriate, supportive root-zone care may be paired with practical changes to watering, soil management, or maintenance practices.
Follow-Up Monitoring
We monitor changes in new growth and overall crown condition to assess the response. Recovery can take time, and recommendations may need to change as the palm’s condition becomes clearer.

When Other Measures May Be More Important
Some palm problems require changes to the growing environment before treatment can help. Poor drainage, excessive watering, root disturbance, and unsuitable maintenance practices can continue to affect a palm even after treatment.
Pruning also needs careful consideration. Removing discolored fronds does not correct the underlying problem, and excessive pruning can remove foliage the palm still needs. When a palm has advanced damage or a condition unlikely to respond to treatment, we explain the limitations and discuss appropriate next steps.
Why Homeowners Choose Eric Putnam BCMA Inc. for Palm Tree Care
Palm care should reflect the needs of the species, the condition of the individual palm, and the factors affecting its growing environment.
Evaluation-Based Recommendations
We evaluate the palm and surrounding site before recommending treatment. Similar symptoms can have different causes and may require different responses.
Site-Specific Treatment Planning
Drainage, irrigation, soil conditions, planting history, root disturbance, and maintenance practices are considered when developing recommendations.
Realistic Scope and Expectations
We explain what treatment is intended to accomplish, what it cannot reverse, and whether additional investigation, site improvements, or monitoring may be necessary.

Common Questions About Palm Tree Treatment
Can a declining palm be saved?
Some palms can improve when the underlying problem is identified and addressed. Others have advanced damage or conditions that treatment cannot reverse. An evaluation helps determine whether treatment is reasonable and what results may be possible.
Does a yellow palm need fertilizer?
Not necessarily. Nutritional problems can cause yellowing, but so can root stress, poor drainage, cold injury, and other conditions. Fertilizer should not be recommended solely because a palm has yellow fronds.
Will brown fronds turn green again?
Dead, brown tissue will not turn green again. Improvement is generally assessed through healthier new growth and changes in the crown over time.
How quickly will I see results?
The response depends on the palm species, the cause of decline, the extent of damage, and growing conditions. Palms may need an extended period to produce enough new growth for improvement to become apparent.
Should yellow or damaged fronds be removed?
Not automatically. Fronds that retain living tissue can still contribute to the palm. Pruning recommendations should account for the palm’s health, nutritional condition, and any safety concerns.
